The Darkest Hour Film Review - I saw this film last night. It was very well done. It’s the story of how Neville Chamberlain’s quest for peace by an attempt to appease Adolf Hitler failed and the British Government decided now that war had come to England to appoint a new Prime Minister. The movie portrays Winston Churchill’s evolution from a doubting, fearful personage to a strong determined leader, determined never to surrender to Nazi tyranny.

Bobby Kennedy Book Review - Authored by Chris Matthews of MSNBC fame, the Bobby Kennedy book evoked memories of the 1960’s, some pleasant and many painful memories. The author skimmed the events of Bobby Kennedy’s life and left me wishing for more details about this important person in our history. Chris Matthews did tell many details about Bobby Kennedy that I didn’t know before; he portrayed him as a highly effective and efficient organizer whereas his brother Jack Kennedy was more of the glad-handed, back-slapping charismatic politician. He uses a lot of his personal memories to describe the events as well as information from other confidants of the Kennedys. He glosses over some unpleasant details such as the rumors that Joseph Kennedy Senior was a rum-runner during the prohibition years and crime was the foundation of his great wealth

Grandma Swank’s Recipe Box Re-release - My Grandmother Frances Swank passed away at age 88. I took all the recipes from her recipe box that she had accumulated over the years and put them into a book entitled Grandma Swank’s Recipe Box. I gave the books to relatives and it’s a best seller of all my 16 books. Grandma and Grandpa Swank had a dry-land wheat farm near Coulee City. When harvest time came Grandma would wake up early and start cooking on her wood-burning stove for the 20 plus crew. She would make homemade bread and home-made pies as well as the main course with all the trimmings to be served the harvest crew at the main meal of the day which was lunch. When the depression came Grandpa turned the horse team loose in the fields and drove away, never looking back. Pioneer women shared their favorite recipes and the recipe below for Applesauce Cake and frosting came from her friend, Dorothy Timboe.
